Internet marketing uses digital networks and electronic devices to promote a product or service.
Learn more about the different types of internet marketing and how you can use them for your business.
Internet marketing is the art and science of selling products and services on the Internet. The art is to find marketing strategies that attract the target market and translate it into sales, while science is the research and analysis required to measure the success of those strategies.
How does internet marketing work?
Internet marketing uses a variety of digital, electronic and electronic means to send a message to current and potential customers. The message can be configured as an image, text or video and distributed in any number of places. It can be as simple as a social media feed, or as complex as a long-term, comprehensive strategy that spans multiple settings, including social media, email newsletters, websites, and other channels.
The type of online marketing that’s right for your business depends on your business, the habits and demographics of your target market, and your budget, among other things. Market research guides you to the right strategy or combination of strategies for your offerings, and detailed performance measurements clarify which works most for you.
For example, a hairdresser looking to include online marketing can add an Instagram feed with pictures of hairstyles that stylists fill out to showcase their talents. A Facebook page can highlight enthusiastic comments from happy customers and display a link to the salon’s website, where potential clients can find information about reservations, available services, and interior photos of the salon.
Do I need to market online?
Internet marketing is becoming increasingly important to small businesses of all kinds.
In the past, internet marketing was something that local brick and mortar based businesses could ignore in favor of traditional approaches. However, as consumer habits change, shoppers are more likely to search for their purchases online before making a purchase. In fact, it’s possible that they are looking for a product online even if they are in the store.1 In general, all businesses must include internet marketing in their marketing mix or they risk losing the deal.
Types of Internet Marketing
There are almost as many types of internet marketing as there are ways to find information online. However, there are several ways to lead to success.
Internet marketing includes search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM). Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of adjusting text on your company website so that the website ranks higher in the search engine results lists when potential customers enter search terms that match your product offerings. It doesn’t cost you anything to modify your website to get better search results performance, and a highly ranked website can bring in a lot of organic traffic (naturally occurring website traffic).
SEM, on the other hand, is a driven search engine marketing strategy. Search engines like Google charge to display your ad when a user searches for one of your keywords. This fee is also known as pay-per-click (PPC) fees.
There are many types of online advertising opportunities. One way is to use an embedded banner ad in web pages. Other options include interstitial ads and ads that appear before or between content. Many social media providers like Facebook sell ads on their platforms
You can use emails to send newsletters and product offers or customized services tailored to the needs of the customer. You can also keep your customers updated with company news, upcoming events, and special offers.
Once you have an email list of potential subscribers who might be interested in your product or service, email marketing is a very effective way to reach them as your message in their email arrives where you are most likely to see it.
